Lakers, Odom still distant on new deal

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Los Angeles Lakers remain far apart with unrestricted free agent Lamar Odom on a new deal. The situation could have been further hampered by the NBA's announcement this week that the salary cap will be lowered for next season.

On top of the salary cap being lowered, the luxury tax threshold was also lowered to $69.9 million for next season, down from $71.15 million. The Lakers were already over that threshold by "tens of millions of dollars," the Times reports.

"I don't know how strong a word that [hopeful] is, but I am hopeful," Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak said. "I'd like to get some clarity in the next day or two or three, but knowing Lamar, it's an emotional time for him. I know he had to get away a little bit. I think Lamar just needs to work his way through it. Maybe it's helpful for him to see other players sign for whatever they signed for, and maybe it's easier to see where you fit into that group."

Kobe answers the call of (jury) duty

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that Kobe Bryant missed practice with the Lakers on Wednesday. The reason for his absence? Jury duty.

Bryant's absence forced the Lakers to push back their official team photo shoot by a month. However, coach Phil Jackson does not expect Kobe to miss any games, stating that he doesn't believe Bryant will be selected to sit on the jury.

Report: Smith headed back to Cleveland

The New York Post reports that Joe Smith -- whose contract was recently bought out by the Oklahoma City Thunder -- might be on the verge of re-joining the Cleveland Cavaliers once he clears waivers.

LeBron James
went on record on Monday to say he was in favor of the Cavs picking up Smith again, giving positive reviews to Smith as a teammate and for his work helping Cleveland down the stretch last year.

The Post also reported that the Lakers and the Hornets are expected to make runs at Smith, but that Cleveland is his expected destination.

Report: Lakers hesitant to lose Odom?

Newsday reports that people within the league are monitoring the situation between Lamar Odom and Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

While it is known the Lakers are evaluating their options for moving Odom -- with the New York Knicks said to be a possible destination -- there are rumblings among several team executives around the NBA that believe Odom does not want to leave Los Angeles, and that the Lakers are not very interested in parting with him.
